Georgetown vs North Carolina: Can Underdogs Defy the Odds in Tonight’s College Basketball Showdown?

The No. 16 North Carolina Tar Heels are back on their home court, ready to face off against the Georgetown Hoyas at the Smith Center this Sunday evening. After eking out a nail-biting three-point victory over Kentucky on Tuesday, the Tar Heels look to regain their stride following a tough 16-point setback against Michigan State. It’s a fresh chance for Hubert Davis’ squad to flex their offensive muscles, especially at home where they’ve been lighting up the scoreboard with some fierce performances. Meanwhile, Georgetown, boasting a respectable 6-2 record, arrives with a gritty offense but a defense that’s had its share of struggles this season—setting the stage for a compelling clash. If you’re curious why I’m all-in on the Tar Heels finding their rhythm again and the angles worth watching this December 7th, you won’t want to miss the breakdown ahead. LEARN MORE

UNC picked up a three-point win over Kentucky on Tuesday to bounce back from a disappointing showing in a 16-point loss to Michigan State.

Georgetown vs North Carolina prediction

Georgetown vs North Carolina best betNorth Carolina Team Total Over 80.5 (-115)

The Georgetown Hoyas aren’t a pushover team, sitting with a 6-2 record in Ed Cooley’s third season in charge. The offense has paved the way for wins over Clemson (79-74) and Maryland (70-60), but the defense hasn’t been up to par and may not travel well in a difficult matchup.

The Hoyas check in at 117th in adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom), surrendering 74 ppg. They don’t rebound particularly well and foul far too often (334th in opponent free throws per game at 18.5), and the personnel isn’t comprised of defensive stoppers.

Caleb Wilson (19.3 ppg) and Henri Veesaar (16 ppg) should be able to feast in the paint against a team that has only one rotational player averaging 20 minutes per game standing above 6-foot-7. Center Vincent Iwuchukwu is out for this contest, and his paint presence will be missed against a North Carolina Tar Heels team that lives at the rim (eighth in near-proximity attempt rate, per Haslametrics).

Hubert Davis’ squad has been more potent at home, scoring 87+ points in four of their five games at the Smith Center. Included in there is an 87-point showing against a Kansas team ranked 11th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Georgetown vs North Carolina same-game parlay

North Carolina isn’t known as a shooting team, hitting 31.7% from downtown. That concern is mitigated against a poor Georgetown defense, so the Tar Heels should like their chances of getting out to a fast start at the Smith Center.

Wilson has scored over 20 points in four of five home games this season. The 6-foot-10 freshman phenom is poised to capitalize on Georgetown’s lackluster interior defense, and so is the 7-foot Veesaar.
