The football world learned this past Sunday that former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy died in an apparent suicide, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s report. He was just 24 years old. 

Lacy had 58 catches for 866 yards and nine touchdowns during his final season of college football, cementing his status as an intriguing prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft. Things took a turn in an awful way on Dec. 17 when he was accused of causing a crash that killed a 78-year-old man. Records from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office showed that he was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless operation of a vehicle. 

Fast forward to April 12, and Lacy was involved in a police chase. 

According to Harris County authorities, Lacy discharged a firearm into the ground during an argument on Saturday night. After arriving on the scene, they pursued the former LSU star in a chase that ended with him crashing. 

The police said Lacy died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Tuesday afternoon, LSU football coach Brian Kelly finally commented on this devastating situation. 

“Kyren was a bright star,” Kelly said. “He had an incredible personality. I’ll remember him as somebody that had a love for the game, a love for being a Tiger and was a guy that played with great emotion.” 

Some LSU players were scheduled to meet with the media on Tuesday, but Kelly made sure to give them time off to process this past weekend’s tragic loss. 

“Everybody on our team has, in some way, had a relationship on different levels with Kyren. Everybody is going to deal with it differently, so first understanding that. There’s not one way you’re supposed to feel. We lean heavily on our professional counseling department. We brought them in, and having that resource here allows them to seek out that one-on-one conversation that some may need.”
