After three straight second-place finishes to the Washington Senators and then Detroit Tigers, the Yankees started their run of four straight titles under Joe McCarthy in 1936. Not by accident, the team’s re-emergence coincided with Joe DiMaggio’s rise to the big-league club on May 3. The rookie made an immediate impact, batting .323 with 29 home runs and 125 RBIs to form one of the best duos in Major League Baseball history with Lou Gehrig (.354, 49 HRs, 152 RBIs).
