The Philadelphia Eagles have made their first significant move ahead of the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline.
They acquired cornerback Michael Carter II from the New York Jets in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie III.
The trade addresses a defensive secondary that has struggled to find consistency at multiple positions this season.
Analyst Greg Cosell recently discussed the trade and its implications during an appearance on the Ross Tucker Podcast.
“They’re getting an elite slot corner, particularly in zone coverage. Right now, at the outside corner position, they’re basically playing the law firm of Bennett, Jackson, and Ringo. I don’t think they feel that that law firm is good enough. Michael Carter is a really good slot-zone corner. I’m curious to see how this now plays out at the outside corner position for the Eagles,” Cosell said.

Philadelphia’s biggest issue has been at outside cornerback opposite Quinyon Mitchell.
Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo have both received opportunities, but neither has provided the stability the Eagles need.
Carter does not directly solve that problem since his primary value comes in the slot.
However, his arrival creates flexibility that could reshape the entire secondary alignment.
With Carter handling slot responsibilities, Cooper DeJean can now move to the perimeter on a full-time basis.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio indicated earlier this week that DeJean’s transition to outside cornerback was already being considered.
Carter’s presence makes that shift more realistic and provides the coaching staff with additional strategic options.
Carter earned an AP All-Pro vote in 2023 and established himself as one of the league’s top nickel corners.
Across 65 career games, he has recorded 223 tackles, 26 passes defended, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one sack.
He also brings versatility by being able to line up at safety when needed.
The Eagles’ secondary now includes Jakobian Bennett, Cooper DeJean, Adoree’ Jackson, Mac McWilliams, Quinyon Mitchell, and Kelee Ringo at cornerback.
