Iowa Basketball Lands Four-Star Forward Trey Thompson—Could He Be the Missing Piece?

It’s official — Trey Thompson is now an Iowa Hawkeye. The 6-foot-8, four-star power forward from Greeneville, Tennessee, who already turned heads by committing just days ago, has made it ink for the 2025-26 season. Trust me, this isn’t just another signing; Thompson brings a rare blend of size, skill, and court IQ that Coach Ben McCollum is already raving about — a player who doesn’t just show up but changes the game with his shooting, passing, and physicality. With nearly 22 points and 10 rebounds per game over his three varsity campaigns, and a shooting efficiency that’ll make defenses sweat, he chose Iowa over some serious heavyweight programs like Tennessee, Kansas, and Purdue. This addition slots him as the fourth gem in the Class of 2025, embedding new firepower alongside some promising names on the roster. If you’re even mildly into college hoops, this signing is worth your attention — the Hawkeyes’ lineup just got a whole lot more interesting. LEARN MORE

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward out of Greeneville, Tenn., chose the Hawkeyes over offers from some powerhouse programs, including Tennessee, Purdue, Kansas, Clemson, and Vanderbilt.Thompson has averaged 21.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game on 56% shooting from the field, 45% from 3-point territory, and 81% from the free-throw line in his three varsity seasons from Greeneville High School, per his MaxPreps profile. After announcing his commitment to Iowa basketball on July 5, four-star power forward Trey Thompson has finally put pen to paper on Wednesday to officially sign with the Hawkeyes for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Thompson is the fourth Class of 2025 prospect to join the Iowa roster, joining West Des Moines’ Trevin Jirak, Oklahoma’s Tate Sage, and Missouri’s Peyton McCollum. He is also the 14th player on the Iowa roster, along with Drake transfers Bennett Stirtz, Kael Combs, Cam Manyawu, Isaia Howard, Tavion Banks, and Joey Matteoni, Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras, Kansas State transfer Brendan Hausen, and Hawkeye returnees Cooper Koch and walk-on Jacob Koch.

“Trey has a level of versatility that we look for in all of our players,” said head coach Ben McCollum. “He’s 6-foot-8, he’s physical, can really shoot it and pass it.  Trey processes the game quickly to be able to trigger offense, which should help us in Big Ten play.”Contact/Follow us @HawkeyesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Iowa news, notes, and opinions. Follow Scout on X: @SpringgateNews
