Russell was heavily recruited out of high school in Mobile, Alabama. He was a four-year starter in high school and named an All-American honorable mention his senior year. Nearly every team in the SEC gave offers to the quarterback, but by the time signing day came around in February 2003, it was down to LSU and Florida State. He chose to head to Baton Rouge.
