Van Dijk’s career is obviously in its final stages and he has a year left on his contract. It will be interesting to see if he’s offered a new one, and even if he is, the personal terms defined therein surely won’t be the same. While it’s impossible to replace the Dutch defensive tower like-for-like, Konate could be the one to step into the role of commanding the back line and using his quality and experience to make others around him play good for years to come.
Truth be told, Konate hasn’t been on a level expected of him this season, and neither have Liverpool as a whole. He was among their weakest links during the most-troublesome period in the early stages of the campaign. However, the fact that he is a fantastic player cannot be doubted, and the inconsistencies he’s been exhibiting lately many put down to the uncertainty about his future severely affecting his focus on the pitch. If he signs a new contract, that particular obstacle will obviously disappear.
