Lionel Messi’s MLS All-Star Game Future Hangs in the Balance: Could Shocking Sanctions Derail the Inter Miami Icon?

Lionel Messi’s participation in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday is in serious doubt, raising eyebrows among fans who were eagerly anticipating seeing the Argentine legend in action. With his absence from team activities leading up to the match, questions have surfaced about possible disciplinary action the Inter Miami star could face.

Set for July 23, the 2025 MLS All-Star Game will pit the league’s top talent against Liga MX All-Stars at Q2 Stadium, home of Austin FC. But with just two days to go, Messi has yet to report to the MLS All-Star squad, casting uncertainty over his availability.

Austin FC coach Nicolas Estevez, tasked with managing the MLS side, remains unsure if he’ll have the chance to coach the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. When asked about Messi’s availability for the midweek clash, the Spanish manager offered a measured response.

I simply coach and manage the players they give me; I think that’s more of a question for them (the organizers). I hope he (Messi) does come, because having the greatest player in history here is very important for everyone. But yes, I hope so; I’m always optimistic about everything and, why not, I hope he can be here,” he said on Monday’s press conference.

With less than 48 hours until kickoff in Texas, even the head coach remains in the dark about Messi’s status. This uncertainty is significant, as it would mark the Argentine’s first appearance in an MLS All-Star Game—a moment fans have long awaited. Beyond disappointment in the stands, Messi could also face league discipline if he skips the event.

Potential sanctions for Messi

Messi has been in top form in recent months, routinely completing full matches for Inter Miami while delivering standout performances. The All-Star Game falls midweek between crucial league fixtures, and while rest might be ideal, skipping the event could come at a cost.

According to MLS rules, any selected All-Star who opts out of the match without an approved medical reason is subject to a one-game suspension. That means Messi would miss Inter Miami’s next league match—an important home clash against league leaders FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26.

The only ways Messi could avoid the All-Star appearance and dodge a suspension would be either Inter Miami reporting an injury or MLS granting a special exemption. However, that path appears unlikely, especially as fellow star and teammate Jordi Alba is confirmed to participate.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano hinted at the club’s stance on Messi and Alba featuring in the showcase. “The players have been called up and I would like them to be able to rest. I know how important the All-Star Game is, and as far as I know, there’s no decision from the club—everything remains normal,” he said during Friday’s press conference. As of now, Inter Miami has not issued an official statement, and time is running out.
