Luke Weaver and Brett Baty’s Silent Struggles: What Went Wrong in Mets’ Crucial Collapse Against Diamondbacks?
Manager Carlos Mendoza was quick to point out that Weaver got behind in the count to Moreno, which opened the door for that clutch hit — credit the Arizona hitter for threading the needle on the changeup. Interestingly, Weaver himself wasn’t convinced he nailed that pitch.
“There was hesitation in my mind on what pitch to go with,” Weaver said. “The pitch clock got me a bit messed up; I was second-guessing and it didn’t land where I wanted. Moreno did well to lay off, but I was just a hair off.”
This marked Weaver’s first blown save of the year, one that stung especially because it came on the heels of McLean’s outstanding outing. Yet, Weaver stayed upbeat, ready to bounce back and support his teammate.
