Maxx Crosby Breaks Silence on Chip Kelly’s Shocking Firing: What He Really Thinks Will Surprise You

Can you really blame the Las Vegas Raiders for pulling the trigger on Chip Kelly after just 11 games? I mean, when you’re 30th in total offensive yards and the team’s supposed to be cooking with new talent like Geno Smith and Brock Bowers, expectations are sky-high — and yet, the output just doesn’t materialize. Kelly, a coach with a resume boasting stints at Oregon, UCLA, and even Ohio State’s national championship squad, arrived with a reputation and a promise, but sometimes pedigree only gets you so far in the NFL. Maxx Crosby’s candid take hits home: respect where it’s due, but at the end of the day, this is a “show me the production” league. So what does Chip’s quick exit say about the pressure cooker environment in Vegas, and can the Raiders’ offense find its rhythm without him? Let’s dive into the drama behind this coaching shakeup and what it means moving forward.

The Las Vegas Raiders fired Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator following their Week 12 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Throughout the season, Kelly’s offense struggled to generate consistent production, and that trend continued against Cleveland.

Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby recently gave his honest thoughts on Kelly being fired, one season after helping Ohio State win the college playoff title.

“Chip’s a guy that I’ve had a lot of respect for. Everyone knows that growing up, I was a big Buckeye fan. So them, winning the [national championship] last year, I was super excited about him coming here. When Chip was here, he was always good to me,” Crosby said. “Unfortunately, this is a production-based business. The offense has been struggling. We needed to make a change. So that’s above my pay grade, but at the end of the day, wish the best for Chip. I know he’ll be back doing his thing soon.”

The Raiders entered their first season under head coach Pete Carroll hoping their offensive pieces would click. With new quarterback Geno Smith, rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, and All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers in the lineup, expectations for an improved output were high.

Those hopes did not materialize. The Raiders rank 30th in total yards per game as the offense continues to underperform.

Kelly brought significant coaching experience from college and the NFL. He was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, and at Oregon and UCLA.

Most recently, he spent one season as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator before joining Carroll’s staff. His tenure in Las Vegas was brief, spanning only 11 games before the organization decided a change was necessary.
