“Meet the Rising Star Who Could Revolutionize College Football: Is He Truly ‘The Next Joe Burrow’?”
Ever wonder how a player can be anointed the “next Joe Burrow” before they’ve even really stepped into the spotlight? It’s a tantalizing thought, right? The anticipation of witnessing a fresh talent burst onto the scene like Burrow did back in 2019 has been the talk of college football since! Enter Greg McElroy, former college quarterback turned analyst, who brought up Notre Dame’s Steve Angeli as potentially following in Burrow’s illustrious footsteps. During a recent episode of Always College Football, he touted Angeli’s poise under pressure, especially during a high-stakes appearance against a formidable Penn State defense. But let’s be real—can we really expect Angeli to replicate Burrow’s meteoric rise? Many fans are skeptical, and their reactions echo through the comment section like a chorus of doubt. So, is Steve Angeli primed for greatness, or is he just another name tossed into the ever-hopeful, always impatient college football hype machine? Join me as we unpack this intriguing narrative and delve into the expectations surrounding this young quarterback. LEARN MORE.
Ever since Joe Burrow set the college football record book on fire in 2019 and proceeded to dominate in the NFL, analysts have wondered who would follow in his footsteps next. One analyst at ESPN may have the answer – a rather surprising answer to boot.
On the latest episode of Always College Football, college analyst Greg McElroy made the case that Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli could be the next superstar in college.
He recalled Angeli’s performance against Penn State and believes if he can “carve up a defense” like he did in his cameo appearance in the College Football Playoff, he may have a high ceiling.
“I’ve seen Steve Angeli thrust into action against a ferocious pass rush in Penn State and one of the best defenses in the country,” McElroy said. “I saw Steve Angeli go into the lineup and just methodically right down the field. Accurately carving up a defense. Who’s to say Steve Angeli’s ceiling, when the real lights are on, isn’t outrageously high? “…What if, when we fast forward to this year, Steve Angeli has some awakening? And all of a sudden, he’s the second coming of Joe Burrow.”

But as much as Notre Dame fans would like Angeli to be the next Joe Montana, most of the ones who entered the comments on McElroy’s video weren’t convinced that he’ll actually be that kind of quarterback.
“Oh boy Greg– you’re usually pretty on point and have great takes, but this is a BAD one. Angeli probably won’t even be the starter,” one user argued.
“I love ND but come on Greg. No doubt Angeli is a good college QB, and an offense tailored to his strengths could be very potent, but don’t put that idea in people’s heads,” wrote another.
“Angeli wouldn’t even start on most top programs.”
“Are we watching the same dude?”
“Steve Angeli??? Are we talking about the same quarterback? Don’t mean to dunk on Steve, but in terms of talent, he isn’t in the same stratosphere as a quarterback as Joe Burrow. What a wild take.”
Angeli has thrown just 80 passes in three seasons with the Fighting Irish. The sample size is way too small to make any firm statements on his abilities in college.
Then again, Joe Burrow didn’t exactly light up the stat sheet the year before he obliterated the record book and led the Tigers to a national title…
