Mets Make Surprising Move: Trey McGough Joins on Mysterious Two-Year Minor League Deal
The Mets are making a savvy move to bolster their pitching cadre by locking in left-hander Trey McGough on a two-year minor league contract, according to Will Sammon from The Athletic. At 27, McGough brings a solid track record—with a 3.21 ERA and 1.15 WHIP spread over six seasons in the minors. Having journeyed through the Pirates, Orioles, and White Sox systems, he’s shown versatility; initially a starter in college at Mount St. Mary’s and early minor league days, shifting to relief roles more recently in 2024 and 2025.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Mets’ bullpen depth on the left side is shaping up nicely with McGough joining forces alongside Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, and expected additions A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley—though Minter might see a delayed debut due to May’s lat surgery. There’s also a slew of other arms vying for spots: Huascar Brazoban, fireballing prospects Dylan Ross and Ryan Lambert, plus contenders like Jonathan Pintaro, Adbert Alzolay, Richard Lovelady, Alex Carrillo, and Joey Gerber. It’s a promising blend of youth and experience that could keep the Mets’ bullpen both deep and dynamic moving forward.
