“Mike Gundy’s Bold Stand: Is the NCAA’s Spring Practice Decision Changing College Football Forever?”
As the spring football season kicks off, a familiar tension is brewing around college campuses—only this time it’s between coaches and the NCAA. With Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy expressing his frustrations over new restrictions on joint spring practices, it’s hard not to wonder: what other rules might the NCAA enforce that could spark similar dissent? Gundy’s candid remarks highlight an ongoing struggle within college football—where tradition battles regulation—and just how eager teams are to embrace competition, even in practice. The Cowboys, after a disappointing season plagued by injuries and unexpected losses, could certainly use the fiery atmosphere of a joint practice, especially when faced with their bitter rivals from Oklahoma. Join me as we dive into some of the latest developments around spring practices, Gundy’s commentary, and imagine what might unfold if the NCAA’s grip loosened a bit. LEARN MORE.
Spring Practice is underway for college football programs across the country but it looks a little bit different this year.
The NCAA isn’t allowing teams to have spring joint practices and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy isn’t thrilled about it.
“I’ll be honest with you, I’m not going to waste my time on who’s going to determine what the rules are anymore because essentially there’s not really enough of them to follow. And I’m not sure how they have grounds to say you can’t do it,” Gundy said, via On3. “Like if somebody just goes and does it, what are they going to do to them?”
The NCAA could look to discipline the program that disobeys the rule with a big fine or potentially something else.
Gundy would love to practice against Oklahoma since the two schools are still bitter rivals but can’t until the NCAA changes the rule. It would be awesome to see the schools do a joint practice despite not playing in the same conference anymore.
There would definitely be some fireworks considering the history of the two teams.
Oklahoma State had a down year in 2024, winning only three games. It’s the fewest wins in a season in the Gundy era.
It came one year after the Cowboys won 10 games and got to the Big 12 Championship Game against the Texas Longhorns. Despite losing to the Longhorns, they still won the Texas Bowl over the Aggies of Texas A&M.
Gundy has been the head coach of the Cowboys for 20 seasons and has compiled a 169-88 record. He has also led them to 10+ wins eight times.
