Former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava might go down in history as a trailblazer in the sport for forcing his way out of the school over an NIL dispute. But the fallout of the decision could find it’s way into a courtroom someday, if one ex-NFL star is to be believed.

In the days since Iamaleava departed Knoxville for greener pastures, those pastures have all suddenly dried up. North Carolina and even Tulane – a school that 99 out of 100 times would welcome an experienced SEC quarterback into the fold with open arms – have reportedly shut their doors to him.

Former All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant is suspicious about the whole situation though. After seeing the news of Tulane pulling their offer, he took to X and suggested that Iamaleava might wind up finding that teams have been “in collusion against him.”

The sudden disinterest in both multiple schools within hours of Iamaleava parting ways with Tennessee is certainly eyebrow raising. From Bryant’s point of view, teams may be colluding to avoid signing Iamaleava to send the message that anyone who tries to force their way out of a program over NIL negotiations will not be able to find another school to play for.

But the more likely point of view is that the situation got so messy, so quickly that Iamaleava is not even worth bringing on board for many of them. The PR hit would just be too much of a headache.

One user responded by pointing out that teams may prefer to simply not have to deal with Iamaleava’s father, who has reportedly been the mastermind of the whole situation. Bryant conceded that it might be true, but still thinks that it might send a message to players seeking to emulate what he did.
