NFL Reporter Sparks Controversy with Bold Joke on Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson—Is There More Behind the Quip?

So, here’s a twist you probably didn’t see coming: Mary Kay Cabot, the ever-reliable NFL reporter, was grabbing headlines not for a scoop — but for a sly quip about Bill Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend during the Pro Football Writers of America’s Hall of Fame ceremony. Imagine this: the legendary coach’s famously tough exterior, clashing with a sharp-witted journalist who had to grow thick skin covering the Browns. Cabot’s joke about Belichick’s ‘hard knocks’ management style and her own fiery comeback sparked laughter — and a bit of online backlash, especially from Jordon Hudson, Belichick’s partner, who wasn’t exactly amused by the age gap jab. Is this just harmless ribbing or something that cuts a little deeper in the age of social media sensitivity? Dive into the full story and decide for yourself. LEARN MORE.

Meet Bill Belichick’s 24-Year-Old Girlfriend (1:20)

Longtime NFL reporter Mary Kay Cabot has made quite a bit of headlines over the past few days, but this time it isn’t for anything she wrote.

While accepting the Bill Nunn Memorial Award from the Pro Football Writers of America at the Hall of Fame this past weekend, Cabot cracked a joke about Bill Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend while recalling her earliest days on the Browns beat.

“Fortunately, I went to the school of hard knocks in the NFL because Bill Belichick was the first Browns coach I ever covered,” Cabot said. “You see, if you start out with Bill Belichick, no one can rattle you after that. If Bill didn’t like something I wrote, he’d call and yell at me. If you asked a dumb question, he’d call you out. Eventually, I had to learn to stand up to him.”

“During one of those yelling matches, I told him, if you don’t have the ‘footballs’ to say that to the guys, then don’t say it to me. Bam,” she continued. “But now I totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time. I was 28 at the time, and he just couldn’t relate to a woman that old.”

Cabot’s one-liner got more than a few laughs both in Canton and on social media. But while some outlets like the New York Post have phrased it as a “savage shot” towards the six-time Super Bowl champ, Cabot stands on the fact that it was merely a playful jab.

“It was a joke! Not a ‘savage shot.’ Just a little joke!” Mary Kay exclaimed. “You can see that from my delivery. All in good fun!”

Jordon Hudson, who’s probably heard enough about how she’s dating a man almost 50 years her senior, didn’t seem to appreciate it.

Reposting a critical response to the joke on X that said: “Not much of a ‘laugh.’ No wonder so many have contempt for the media, especially those who want to be the story rather than [report] on the story.”
