Burns will hit a $3 million performance bonus once he reaches 10 games played (he’ll get an extra $1 million if he plays 23 minutes or more for 70 games, but that seems unlikely). If Colorado runs out of cap space, that bonus won’t count against the books next season and will carry over to the following year instead. In other words, the Avs can build their roster for next season as if Burns is a $1 million player, so long as they’re comfortable with his performance bonus rolling over as a dead-cap charge in 2026-27.
