Committing seven years and $49 million to a 29-year-old defenseman coming off a career year does carry some risk. There’s a real chance that Vladislav Gavrikov is closer to being a No. 3/4 defenseman moving forward than the top-pair workhorse he broke out as last season, especially moving from a team with elite structure in L.A. to one that was disorganized and chaotic defensively last season.
