NHL Free Agency 2025: Which 10 Blockbuster Contracts Are Redefining the Game?
This year’s crop of unrestricted free agents was quite underwhelming. There weren’t many true difference-makers available, especially after many of the top names re-signed with their teams before July 1. It wasn’t easy to find exciting discounts or under-the-radar depth players.
With that in mind, we have to grade the contracts signed in free agency on a curve. You’d use words such as “reasonable” and “fair value” to describe the best contracts on this list rather than “steal” or “bargain.” In some ways, that represents the league’s broader shift in this new cap-growth era. When cap space is at an abundance but impact players aren’t as readily available on the trade and free-agent market, acquiring high-end talent becomes a bigger win than ever. Contract efficiency still matters, but it’s not the be-all, end-all the way it used to be in the flat-cap era.
