There’s a kind of strategic dance happening here, where decision-makers weigh the value of investing between the pipes against plugging holes elsewhere on the roster. Goaltending May Not Be the Only Position That Gets Filled

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick and stated that teams looking for goaltending could improve other areas to help their teams succeed.

Scott Laughlin: “I think, Dave, when you look around the NHL, is, is goaltending once again, too, right? We’re wondering about Laurent Brossoit, who’s working his way back with the Blackhawks. But clearly there’s not, there’s not a seat at the table in Chicago for right now, right? Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom appear to be that one-two punch for now and for years to come in the Windy City.

So Brossoit was working his way back. You look at Winnipeg, obviously, without (Connor Hellebuyck) for at least another month. You look at the Ducks now with a banged up goaltending situation, right? Lukas Dostal for a couple of weeks, and now Petr Mrazek leaves night. Again, silver lining might be the fact that at least you’ve got a guy in the hole in Ville Husso who has been the starting goaltender before, too.

But I get some interesting vibes from some of these teams here with regards to their goaltending situations. And I know Stuart Skinner was coming off an impressive shutout on the weekend. But how long is that going to last, given his history too, so that goaltending carousel. I wonder, if it’s going to start to pick up some steam here in the next couple of weeks?”

Dave Pagnotta: “I mean, Chicago might, might kind of start things off in that regard. Like you mentioned with Brossoit and them making him available, or letting it know that, that he’s available, giving his camp the opportunity to speak to other teams, to try to help facilitate something.

You talk, you look at some of these clubs, and, I mean, you reference injuries, it’s not just the skaters, right, not just the guys up front. Obviously, it’s affecting the net minders too. With everything that they’ve gotten, we’ve seen some others like, you know, (Anthony) Stolarz out of action for an extended period of time, longer than the Leafs originally thought. Good thing. They’ve got (Joseph) Woll back and, you know, (Denis) Hildeby has been pretty solid when called upon.

I think teams really have to evaluate where they’re at and if they’re going to make moves. Like the Oilers, for example, if they’re going to make moves, where’s the best area to try to improve? Is it really the goaltending, or are we better suited fixing up our bottom six and trying to get that contained more? Do we need a more rugged defenseman to kind of shut things down a little bit differently, and to give our goaltenders that much more help?

Like teams are looking at this, having to evaluate where they’re at financially, and is it more beneficial to plug another area versus between the pipes? And I don’t know if we’ll see too much activity across the board.

We certainly know Pittsburgh has a lot of net minders, and they’ve been out there in the last couple of weeks and hearing what’s going on with (Tristan) Jarry and so on. But I just don’t know if we’ll see too much activity this season with respect to the goaltenders.

And we may see a few, 1, 2, 3, kind of, kind of move here. But anything impactful for teams that need it, like Edmonton, I don’t know if we’re going to see too much happening here throughout the year. I think it’s other areas that some of these teams may focus on.
