NHL Shake-Up: Are the Chicago Blackhawks Ready to Cut Ties with Laurent Brossoit?

When it comes to shuffling the goalie deck, Laurent Brossoit’s name just popped right up on my radar—and trust me, that’s no small detail. Here’s a guy under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, sidelined for what feels like forever thanks to a brutal run of surgeries, yet now suddenly available for talks. The Blackhawks are clearly ready to move on, giving other teams the green light to inquire about Brossoit’s future. It’s a complex scenario—cap hits, injury history, and a roster that’s evolving fast with new investments already paying dividends. But let’s not overlook that Brossoit’s proven chops when healthy: solid save percentages and that rare ability to stabilize a tandem. For any franchise hunting for dependable goaltending firepower down the stretch, this could be a hidden gem waiting to be snatched. Curious to know the full backstory and what’s next? LEARN MORE

With teams looking to upgrade their goaltending later on down the road, you can add another name to the mix in Laurent Brossoit of the Chicago Blackhawks.

During the Saturday Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet stated that the Chicago Blackhawks have let it be known they are taking calls on goaltender Laurent Brossoit.

NHL Rumors: The Chicago Blackhawks, and Connor Bedard

Ron MacLean: “Lastly, Laurent Brossoit.”

Elliotte Friedman: “Yeah, so Laurent Brossoit is coming back. He’s going to play next week in the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint. He’s a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. He hasn’t played in a year and a half. He got hurt in the 2024 playoffs and hasn’t played since.

But the Blackhawks have given teams permission to talk to him, so you can understand what his situation is, what this exact surgery was, what the process is back. And Blackhawks don’t really have room for him.

Now, he’s carrying a $3.3 million cap hit, and not everybody can take that. So there might be some work that needs to be done here, but he will be watched very closely, and the Blackhawks have allowed people to talk to him.”

Remember, Laurent Brossoit signed a two-year deal with the Blackhawks in the summer of 2024. However, before he even played a game for Chicago, Brossoit underwent not one but two surgeries. First, he had meniscus surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2024-25 season. This past September, Brossoit had hip surgery.

NHL Rumors: What Will the Contracts for Connor Bedard and Leo Carlsson Look Like?

The Blackhawks wanted to use Brossoit as their guy to pair with Arvid Soderblom, but instead traded for Spencer Knight from the Florida Panthers. That was a wise decision as the Hawks inked him to a three-year, $17.5 million extension with an AAV of $5.83 million. The investment is already paying off.

Having a goaltender who can play around 25 games a season will help any tandem in the league. He has a career save percentage of .911 and a 2.64 goals-against average. In his last season with the Winnipeg Jets in 23-24, he played in 23 games, posting a 15-5-2 record with a 2.00 GAA and a .927 save percentage.

Laurent Brossoit could be an excellent addition for a team in need of goaltending help.
