Phillies' Andrew Painter Shocks MLB with 8 Ks, Silencing Top Prospect James Wood Twice in Stunning Debut Victory

Philadelphia staked itself to a 3-0 lead before the Nationals (3-2) scrapped in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a one-run game. Painter’s earned run came after he already received his standing ovation from a delighted Philly crowd, as CJ Abrams scored on a throwing error by García later in the frame.

The Phillies selected Painter with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Close to five years later, he made his first start for the club.

Last year, Painter’s ERA ballooned to 5.40 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he had a hard time rediscovering his mojo and fleshing out his pitching arsenal after returning from Tommy John surgery.
