Rams Take a Gamble: Former UFL Kicker’s Surprising New Role Revealed

So here we are, with the Los Angeles Rams gearing up for a nail-biting Week 10 clash against their arch-rivals, the San Francisco 49ers—and yet, amidst the gridiron battles and roaring crowds, there’s a surprising twist lurking in the shadows: the kicking game. Joshua Karty, once a dependable name on the scoreboard, has been strangely out of sync this season, missing field goals and extra points as if the pressure’s playing tricks on his mind—or maybe the turf’s got a vendetta. After watching him stumble through two missed kicks against the Saints, the Rams took a bold detour, signing none other than Harrison Mevis, affectionately known as “The Thiccer Kicker.” Standing 6-foot and weighing 242 pounds, Mevis is no typical kicker, and his near-perfect UFL track record paints a picture of someone who might just restore calm to a stormy leg. But here’s the kicker, literally—will this gamble pay off, or are the Rams about to discover that sometimes, even the best-laid plans need a little more than muscle and history to find the sweet spot on game day? As Sean McVay humbly shoulders the blame, refusing to single out any player, one can’t help but wonder: can a change in the kicking booth spark the late-season surge the Rams desperately need?

The Los Angeles Rams are heading toward a tough Week 10 matchup against the rival San Francisco 49ers.

While it would appear that all is well, one issue so far this season has been the disappointing performance of kicker Joshua Karty, who has missed five of 15 field goal attempts and three extra points.

That is a major step back from missing five of 34 field goal attempts last season.

After Karty missed two kicks in their Week 9 win against the New Orleans Saints, the Rams decided to make a move and signed a former UFL kicker.

“The Rams are signing K Harrison Mevis — a.k.a. ‘The Thiccer Kicker’ — who stands 6-foot, 242 pounds. He went 20-of-21 on field goals with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions,” Ari Meirov wrote on X.

Rams head coach Sean McVay was adamant that the kicking woes can’t continue, and he placed the blame on himself and no player in particular.

It was a classy move, as it would have been easy to point the finger at Karty, whose job may be in jeopardy if he misses a kick against the 49ers.

Mevis has spent time with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers as a member of their practice squads and as a training camp participant, though he has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game.

As a playoff contender, the Rams aren’t standing pat, and it could only be a matter of time before Mevis gets to make his debut.
