Ravens Make Unexpected Move: Luke Elzinga Set to Shake Up Special Teams—What This Means for the Season!
According to KRPC 2’s Aaron Wilson, the Ravens have signed punter Luke Elzinga, who was an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma last year. Elzinga received a rookie minicamp invitation from the Tennessee Titans following the draft but did not stick around with the team beyond that. He was not picked up by another squad prior to the regular season.
Elzinga, who is notably a left-footed punter, was a collegiate punter for five years. He played at Central Michigan from 2020 through 2022 before transferring to Oklahoma. For his career at the college level, Elzinga punted 232 total times and averaged 43.1 yards per punt. He also showed some ability as a passer on trick fake-punt plays, completing 100% of his four pass attempts for 86 yards.
The 28-year-old has 55 career games under his belt in five collegiate seasons. Given his lack of NFL experience, the Ravens will likely add at least one other punter this offseason — whether it be an incoming rookie or available veteran. As we’ve seen many times over the years, including with Stout last season, having an effective punter can be a huge added bonus and impact the result of games. Another important responsibility is being the holder on field goals, which Stout became very reliable at.
Assuming kicker Tyler Loop is back in the fold, the Ravens will have a new specialist trio with Loop, long snapper Nick Moore and the team’s new punter.
