Rays’ Catcher Shuffle: Why Did They Land Nick Fortes Right After Shipping Another Behind the Plate?

Well, here we go again—another shuffle right on the heels of the trade deadline buzz. Tampa Bay just nabbed Nick Fortes from Miami, adding depth behind the plate after shipping Danny Jansen off to Milwaukee. It’s one of those moves that might not scream “blockbuster,” but if you follow the undercurrents, there’s plenty to unpack. Fortes, a guy who’s carved out a respectable if not flashy career with the Marlins, has shown some spark lately, hitting an impressive .300 over his last 29 contests. Meanwhile, the Marlins scooped up Matthew Etzel, a minor league outfielder who’s been on the move more times than most players wish for, while the Rays bolstered their infield prospects by acquiring Jadher Areinamo from the Brewers. Etzel’s been sidelined since late June, but his track record at Double-A Montgomery shows some promise. These kinds of trades—sometimes flying under the radar—can really swing a team’s momentum down the stretch, and I’m curious to see how these fresh pieces find their groove in new homes.
