As the spring season rolls in, college football fans eagerly anticipate something special on the horizon: the Ohio State spring game! In a time when many programs are re-evaluating their exhibition strategies, Coach Ryan Day, at the helm of the defending national champions, is making waves by affirming OSU’s commitment to its traditional spring game. For Day, it’s more than just practice; it’s a celebration of football, a chance for the team to gel, and an opportunity for fans to connect with their beloved Buckeyes during the long, quiet stretch before fall. With just weeks to go, Day emphasizes the importance of getting players on the field—because who doesn’t want to see some action as they gear up for that critical showdown against Texas later this year? In the face of a changing landscape when it comes to college football‘s spring games, Ryan Day and the defending national champions appear to be bucking the trend.

During his press conference at the top of the week, the Buckeyes coach explained his reasoning for why OSU will still hold its annual offseason exhibition. Saying, its great for both players and fans in the long period of time between the winter and fall.

“I think it’s good for everyone to know. My plan is to have a spring game,” Day said. “I just think we need to save a little bit of wiggle room in case we take injuries. That’s it. We want to do this. We want to play a spring game.”

“Now, there may be some guys that are held from the spring game, but not many,” he admitted. “We feel like, I think, we’re 159 days away from playing Texas, and that day will matter to a lot of young players. So, well, we need to get out there and compete. The format of it and how it works will probably be similar to what we’ve done in the past.”

Spring games have come under fire of late due to coaches like Nebraska’s Matt Rhule arguing that they invite tampering. But Day sees it as a great opportunity to get Ohio State’s season off on the right foot both on and off the field.

“It will be a great opportunity for fans and folks to see our guys and get out there and play. That part of it, to me, and it is what it is but we’ve got to go do it. It’s important that we start the season fast and the first step is playing in the spring game,” he shared.

“If we’re down some linemen or down some bodies and we have to adjust we’ll figure it out from there. I guess we’re just three weeks out here. So, we plan on playing in that spring game on April 12th. So, we’re looking at getting a great crowd and I know we’ve got some great things planned that day.”
