Ponder initially expected to begin his college career under Reed after the Hall of Famer accepted Bethune-Cookman’s head coaching job in December 2022. However, Reed’s tenure unraveled before it officially started following an Instagram Live broadcast in which he used profanity while criticizing conditions on campus. Although Reed later apologized, the university chose not to finalize his contract and moved in a different direction.
With the coaching change, Ponder’s future became uncertain. He ultimately remained at Bethune-Cookman as a redshirt freshman but did not see game action during his time with the Wildcats. That path later shifted when Deion Sanders brought him to the Colorado Buffaloes football as a developmental quarterback.
