Soroka’s Masterclass Nearly Overshadowed as Diamondbacks’ Bullpen Falters in Nail-Biting Win Over Tigers
Record: 1-3. Pace: 40-122. Change on 2025: -1.
After the rough patch of being swept in Los Angeles, tonight’s home opener at Chase Field felt like just the remedy we needed. From the jump, the Diamondbacks weren’t messing around. In the opening five innings, the offense matched what they mustered in the entire first series. Meanwhile, Michael Soroka’s debut with the D-backs was nothing short of historic. He locked down five scoreless innings and struck out ten batters, tying his personal best. The pièce de résistance? Soroka delivered the team’s fourth-ever immaculate inning — nine pitches, all strikes, three strikeouts — a feat we haven’t seen from the D-backs since Wade Miley pulled it off back in 2012.
Sure, the bullpen – namely Joe Ross and Ryan Thompson – nearly let an 8-0 lead slip away, aided no doubt by some eyebrow-raising umpiring calls. That seventh inning had many of us clutching our heads as the Tigers managed six runs, shrinking what seemed a sure win into a nail-biter. Thankfully, Juan Morillo, Taylor Clarke, and Paul Sewald steadied the ship by retiring the final seven batters, with Sewald earning his first save of the season without drama. The home opener ended with the Diamondbacks snagging their first victory of the year before a packed house at Chase.
