On the mound opposite, Justin Verlander—the triple Cy Young winner—was a familiar adversary. And though we missed Pavin Smith, sidelined and fresh off a stint on the IL, the 43-year-old Verlander showed signs that age is catching up. Arizona wasted no time attacking, with sizzling hits from Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll lighting up the field, including Carroll’s first homer of the year that propelled the D-backs into a commanding lead.

The offense kept the pressure high, piling on runs while the Tigers’ starter was pulled after just four innings. By the fifth, Arizona had built out an 8-0 advantage—a comfortable cushion, or so it seemed. Enter the bullpen saga: Ross and Thompson struggled, the latter rattled by questionable balk calls, nearly unraveling the game before Morillo, Clarke, and Sewald sealed the deal. Sewald’s return as closer was smooth sailing, consistently powering 92 mph fastballs and earning a clean save.
