Steve Spurrier’s Shocking Remark on Arch Manning Has Everyone Talking—You Won’t Believe What He Said!

If Arch Manning’s ready to take the reins at Texas, why was he warming the bench behind Quinn Ewers last season? That’s the million-dollar question Steve Spurrier threw into the mix, poking at the buzz that Manning’s already a Heisman frontrunner. Spurrier’s logic? When one guy’s stumbling, give the other a fair shot—seems simple, right? But Texas’ QB drama isn’t just fodder for offseason chatter; it taps into deeper debates about loyalty, leadership, and who really has the juice to lead Longhorns deep into the SEC grind. With fans split and reactions flying—from solid defense of Ewers’ grit to comparing QB controversies of yore—this saga is anything but settled. And let’s not forget, Arch flashed some serious skills off the bench, keeping his name in the Heisman conversation alive. So, as the new season looms, the big question still stands: Who’s truly Texas’ best bet under center? LEARN MORE.

Eli Manning’s Advice For Arch Manning (0:21)

Steve Spurrier has his questions about Arch Manning going into his first season as Texas’ starter.

Appearing on “Another Dooley Noted Podcast” this week, the legendary college football coach and former Heisman Trophy winner wondered why if Arch was so good he was sitting behind Quinn Ewers last season.

“Most people are picking Texas to win the SEC in football,” Spurrier said. “They’ve got Arch Manning already winning the Heisman, too. My question is, if he was this good how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year? He was a 7th round pick.”

“One guy is struggling? Give the other guy a chance,” the Head Ball Coach added. “We let them all compete. The one you think can play the best, let him go. If he struggles, then you put the next one in.”

It didn’t take long for Spurrier’s comments to go viral amongst the Longhorns faithful.

“Quinn was 2nd all SEC last year with missing games,” a user said.

“🤣🤣🤣🤣 let em know coach,” another laughed.

“Tell em goat.”

“Experience and chemistry with teammates,” a fan pointed out.

“Because why do you stiff a QB who’s been on campus and bled for you and is a leader? Would have looked so bad, exactly how OU looked last year for getting rid of Dillon Gabriel to play the young Jackson Arnold,” another person commented.

“It’s a fair question,” another user replied.

“The same reason Chris Leak ‘played all the time’ over Tim Tebow,” another fan posted.

“Why? Because Quinn… oh, forget it. This will be every SEC opponents’ talking point during talking season,” Brian Davis shared.

While some would argue Ewers held Texas back in 2024, Steve Sarkisian believed in his experience and ability to run the offense and it resulted in an 13-3 record and CFP semifinal appearance.

Arch definitely showed flashes in the limited time that he did get though. Completing almost 68% of his passes for 939 yards with a 9:2 touchdown to interception ratio and four more scores on the ground.
