Bill Belichick’s book tour was supposed to be a straightforward slam dunk—a legendary coach sharing decades of hard-earned wisdom in The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football. But, as it turns out, even the master of X’s and O’s can’t always control the narrative. Instead of dissecting game plans or championship glory, the spotlight veered into more personal, and arguably messier, territory when Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, abruptly shut down a question about their relationship during a CBS Sunday Morning interview—leaving viewers wondering: was this just an awkward sideline moment or the start of a much bigger distraction? While the book drops May 6 and Belichick prepares to hit the stage with NYU’s Suzy Welch for what promises to be a compelling conversation about life’s wins and losses, the latest drama surrounding the media, his private life, and those “I fked up” admissions might just steal the spotlight. Now the question is, can Belichick regain control of the playbook, or has this turbulent pre-release campaign already thrown a hail mary into his efforts?

What Bill Belichick Has Been Up To With New Girlfriend (1:12)

For undesirable reasons, Bill Belichick has successfully drawn more attention to his book tour.

The North Carolina head coach went on CBS Sunday Morning to promote his new autobiography, The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football. To his chagrin, the interview made headlines beyond football topics. Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, halted a question about how their romantic relationship started by telling host Tony Dokoupil they’re “not talking about this.”

However, the show must go on. The book will be released on Tuesday, May 6, and Belichick has a public appearance planned that day.

NYU’s business school will host Belichick for an “exclusive conversation” with professor and New York Times bestselling author Suzy Welch. The event, which starts at 5 p.m. ET, is free to attend.

“This is a conversation about life, learning, losing – and winning big – that is not to be missed!” a page promoting the panel reads. “Professor Welch and Coach Belichick will also be available to sign books that can be purchased before and after the event.”

Belichick referenced the upcoming talk with Welch in an email Hudson posted Tuesday on Instagram.

In a message sent on April 10, long before the CBS interview aired, the six-time Super Bowl champion expressed frustration over the media focusing on negative anecdotes rather than his storied coaching career. He was upset over an unspecified article sensationalizing an admission from his book that, “I f**cked up.”

“I have no doubt the ‘I f***ked up’ will not be the main focus of Ray Dalio & Suzy Welch in my conversations with them,” Belichick wrote.

For Belichick’s sake, let’s hope everything that has occurred since that email won’t dominate the conversation either.

According to TMZ, Hudson got “heated” and left the CBS interview, causing a 30-minute delay. The Athletic also reported that Hudson “played an instrumental role” in HBO ceasing plans for Hard Knocks episodes chronicling Belichick’s UNC football program.

Belichick released a statement on Wednesday, claiming that CBS defied an agreement to “focus solely” on the book. CBS News said they agreed to “a wide-ranging interview” with “no preconditions or limitations.”
