Texas A&M Safety Reveals Surprising Secret Behind Rising Aggie WR’s Breakout—and What’s Next for Defense
Friday afternoon unveiled some pretty revealing chatter from the heart of Texas A&M’s football camp. I caught up with three pivotal voices — senior defensive lineman Albert Regis, senior safety Bryce Anderson, and the electrifying sophomore wideout Ashton Bethel-Roman — right after their 13th preseason practice. There’s a lot brewing under the surface, from Regis stepping into fatherhood and engagement, to buzz-worthy scrimmage performances that hint at a defense ready to assert itself. Meanwhile, Anderson’s admiration for Bethel-Roman, a speedy newcomer staking claim as the potential No. 3 receiver, adds an intriguing layer to the offensive mix. And you can’t overlook the glowing reputation starting QB Marcel Reed’s earning in the locker room. The Aggies are tuning up, strategizing, and pushing toward a promising season kickoff against UTSA on August 30th. Stick around — it’s a story with plenty of momentum and surprises up its sleeve. Taking the mic for the first time since last fall, Regis provided several updates about his personal life, as the senior is reportedly a new father and has just gotten engaged. On the field, Regis stated that, during last Saturday’s first and only scrimmage, the defense held its own.For Texas A&M’s defense to take the next step, the secondary needs to prevent big plays in the passing game, and if the coverage tightens up, the newly formed pass rush unit, especially the interior defensive tackle rotation, which now features Iowa State transfer Tyler Onyedim, will be able to collapse the pocket. On Friday afternoon, three Texas A&M football players, senior defensive lineman Albert Regis, senior safety Bryce Anderson, and sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman, spoke to the media after the Aggies’ 13th preseason practice, and had plenty to state regarding the state of the team and the progress made on both sides of the ball.
“His tempo at which he runs his routes. He runs his routes at the same tempo. He’s so fast. He’s explosive. He can accelerate off the line. He gets from 0 to 100 real quick.”
When asked about starting quarterback Marcel Reed, Anderson stated, “Heisman runner. That’s what I feel like with Marcel.” That is quite the endorsement from someone who has faced Reed nearly every day over the last two weeks. In the secondary, Anderson confirmed that the defense recorded a handful of interceptions, communicated well during each snap, and, most importantly, did not miss many tackles.
At the same time, Bryce Anderson had plenty of praise for Ashton Bethel-Roman, who, despite barely seeing the field last season, has been working towards the No. 3 receiver spot this month. Roman, who flipped his commitment from Arkansas to Texas A&M in the 2024 recruiting class, is one of the fastest players on the roster, while his fluid route-running style and soft hands have made him one of the more talked-about players during the preseason.
Texas A&M will host UTSA on Saturday, August 30, at 6:00 p.m., where the game will air on ESPN.Heading into the weekend, the Aggies will embark on more weeks of preseason practice before game week arrives.
