Bru McCoy sadly announced on Tuesday night that he’s retiring from football.
McCoy started his college career at USC before transferring to Tennessee. Some fans were hopeful he’d hear his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft, but that didn’t happen. Well, we now have a good idea as to why.
The former five-star recruit from Los Angeles revealed that he’s retiring from football for medical reasons. In 2023, he suffered a displaced fracture of his right ankle. That most likely played a factor in his decision.
“It’s with a heavy heart but a feeling of gratitude that I share with you guys that I made the difficult decision to medically retire from football,” McCoy wrote. “This has been one of the toughest decisions of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family, and people closes to me I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the right path for my long-term health and well-being.”
McCoy wasn’t done talking about his decision.
“Although this chapter in my football journey has come to an end, I believe this is just the beginning. I’m excited about the next steps, and I’m determined to continue pushing myself in new directions. This is not the end of my pursuit of greatness, just a new beginning.”
Shortly after McCoy shared his retirement letter with the public, college football fans sent him encouraging messages on social media.
“It was a pleasure watching you play the game you love young Bull,” one fan said. “I’m certain you will be a success In whatever endeavors you choose to undertake in your next phase of life.”
“That’s hard now but your star is bright and can’t wait to see Bruuuuuu once again at the pinnacle of whatever your path may be! Thank you. You are a true VFL,” a Tennessee fan wrote.
“You are an inspiration to so many, we absolutely loved watching you play the game, and I wish you every success the world has to offer, please allow me one last chant, BRU,” a social media user added.
“Hate to hear that. Go be great in your next chapter,” another fan said.

It’s safe to say Tennessee fans will always treasure the good times McCoy had with the program.
McCoy finished his career at Tennessee with 108 catches for 1,356 yards and seven touchdowns.
While it’s incredibly sad that McCoy is retiring at such a young age, it sounds like he’s at peace with his decision.
