The Shot Seth Trimble Can’t Forget: A Moment That Changed Everything

Sometimes, a basketball season leaves a sting that lingers far beyond the final buzzer—and boy, did the 2022-23 North Carolina Tar Heels season do just that. Just a year after tasting the thrill of the NCAA Tournament Championship Game, these Tar Heels found themselves on the sideline, missing the NCAA tournament entirely—and then turning down an NIT invitation, no less. Out of a promising 4-man recruiting class, only one stalwart remains, senior guard Seth Trimble from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. And if you think that sounds like the setup for a redemption story, you’re right on the money. Saturday night against fierce rival Duke, Trimble etched one of the most unforgettable moments in his collegiate career—a buzzer-beater three-pointer that didn’t just win the game, but cemented his legacy in Chapel Hill lore. It was more than just a shot; it was a testament to loyalty and grit in an era dominated by NIL deals and transfer chaos—a final home game against Duke forever etched in his heart. The 2022-23 UNC basketball season was a tough, painful one that most fans likely remember to this day. A year after making the NCAA Tournament Championship Game, North Carolina missed the NCAA tournament – and declined an NIT invite.

Those Tar Heels brought in a 4-man recruiting class, but only one remains in Chapel Hill to this day: Seth Trimble, a senior guard from Menomonee Falls, Wis.

Now UNC’s captain in his fourth and final season of college basketball, Trimble delivered the greatest moment of his collegiate career on Saturday night against Duke.

With time expiring, Trimble caught a pass in the corner from Derek Dixon. Trimble launched a wide-open three over Caleb Foster’s outstretched arms, watched it swish through the net and joined his teammates in pandemonium after North Carolina’s thrilling, 71-68 upset of its archrival.

After the game, Trimble detailed what making that shot meant, particularly in the final UNC-Duke game he’ll play in Chapel Hill.

“It’s special,” Trimble said. “I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life. No matter how this year ends, as I grow older, this will be something that I remember, celebrate with my teammates, see the fans storm the court. My dad found me on the court, because the game wasn’t over but he did find me. Just making a play like that, last home (UNC-Duke) game, knowing how much this game meant to me was definitely crazy.”

Trimble scored the Tar Heels’ (19-4, 7-3 ACC) first five points, so his game-winning 3-pointer proved fitting for the perfect ending. Trimble ended his night with 16 points (second behind Caleb Wilson’s 23), three steals, two rebounds and one block.

In a college basketball era dominated by NIL money and the transfer portal, Trimble is a rare find. His loyalty, persistence and true passion for the Carolina Blue finally paid off on Saturday night against Duke (21-2, 10-1 ACC) – in a moment he’ll remember forever.
