The Surprising MLB Team That Shattered Records and Still Stuns Fans Today

4. 70-24 (.745) – 1930 St. Louis Stars

The Stars won the Negro National League in 1930 with Willie Wells, George Giles and Cool Papa Bell posting huge offensive numbers. Wells, a Hall of Famer, hit .399 with 18 homers and 112 RBIs in just 341 at-bats, Giles batted .360 and Bell hit .359 with nine homers.

5. 52-18 (.743) – 1925 Hilldale Daisies

Hall of Famer Judy Johnson hit .389 with a 1.007 OPS in his 262 at-bats to lead the Daises to first place in the Eastern Colored League in 1925.

6. 103-36 (.741) – 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates

The 1902 Pirates are the only 100+ win team on this list not to play a game in the playoffs. That is, they didn’t because the MLB had not yet had its inaugural postseason. With skipper Fred Clarke at the helm, the Pirates led the National League in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.286), on-base percentage (.344), and runs scored (775). Outfielder Ginger Beaumont owned the highest batting average in the NL, reaching the .357 mark, and shortstop Honus Wagner led the league with six home runs (it was called the Dead-Ball Era for a reason).
