Jauan Jennings is pushing to get a new contract, and star WR Brandon Aiyuk will miss something close to one-third of the season.

With that in mind, they looked to snatch a player let go by one of their divisional rivals.

They signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a practice squad deal, and when asked about that decision, the former Green Bay Packers pass-catcher talked about his familiarity with the offense:

“Not having to learn a new system,” Valdes-Scantling said. “Being able to get onto the field right away, obviously, that’s the goal. And so, being able to jump-start that process of learning the system, it betters the chances of you being on the field.”

The Niners’ offensive playbook, run by Klay Kubiak, is not very different from the one Klint Kubiak deployed in Seattle.

Valdes-Scantling also admitted that the Niners had been trying to get him for quite a while now, even long before he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He also said that Aaron Rodgers tried to recruit him to get back together with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while he gave that idea some consideration because of their relationship, he ultimately chose to stay in the NFC West.

Valdes-Scantling isn’t a superstar by any means, but he gives Kyle Shanahan a perennial big-play threat roaming free in the open field.

He’s a ‘boom-or-bust’ type of pass-catcher who can leave defenders in the dust for a 40-yard gain or drop a wide-open pass just short of the goal line.

Then again, beggars can’t be choosers, and the Niners need someone to help carry the load while Aiyuk works his way back to the field.
