A college football player is tragically dead in an “awful” car accident at just 22 years old.

A deadly car accident took place in Alabama on Tuesday evening. Tragically, it took the life of a veteran college football player. A man has since been charged with murder in the accident, while also being accused of fleeing the scene of the crime.

William D. Hardrick, a 22-year-old college football player from Birmingham, Alabama, was killed in the accident.

The college football player was a defensive back at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee. He previously played at Mississippi State University and Miami University in Ohio.

Hardrick was driving home from school at the time of the crash.

West said a vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 65 left the road and flipped several times before the car eventually stopped on Piney Chapel Road. The man who was pronounced dead at the scene has since been identified as Hardrick.

Eight separate crashes on I-65 south were reported at the approximate time, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Austin Peay State University in Tennessee is deeply saddened by his passing.

“William Hardrick was an exceptional young man, and our team is heartbroken by his loss. He made everyone around him better and has made a real impact both on and off the field. We lift up the Hardrick family in prayer as we grieve this tragic loss with them,” Austin Peay State University football coach Jeff Faris said.
