Athletes Who Unfortunately Passed Away In 2024 (1:45)

Just a few months ago, the college football community learned that Ben Christman passed away at the young age of 21.

Christman, a former four-star recruit, started his college career at Ohio State before transferring to Kentucky. After the 2024 season, he entered the transfer portal and took his talents to UNLV to reunite with offensive line coach Mike Sollenne.

Unfortunately, Christman never got the chance to suit up for UNLV. The talented offensive lineman was found dead in an off-campus apartment.

“Our team’s heart is broken to hear of Ben’s passing,” UNLV coach Dan Mullen said. “Since the day Ben set foot on our campus a month ago, he made the Rebels a better program. Ben was an easy choice for our Leadership Committee as he had earned the immediate respect, admiration and friendship of all his teammates. Our prayers go out to his family and all who knew him. Ben made the world a better place and he will be missed.”

Nearly three months after his death, the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner provided an update on Christman’s death.

According to TMZ Sports, Christman passed away from cardiac arrhythmia and cardiomyopathy, a disease that weakens the heart muscle.

UNLV’s football team has not yet released a statement on this report. Perhaps the school is collecting more information.

From TMZ’s report:

The details behind the death are heartbreaking — a teammate returned home to check on Christman after he missed a workout … and discovered the offensive lineman in his bedroom lying on his back, foaming at the mouth and with purple fingers.

It was determined he had been dead for “a few hours” before he was found.

There weren’t any suspicious items found at Christman’s apartment, according to the authorities.

Our thoughts remain with Christman’s loved ones.
