Unbelievable Shakeups Rock Post-Spring College Football Top 25 — Who’s the New Contender?

Spring ball’s wrapped, campus chapters are closing, and the countdown to the 2025 college football season is already ticking—less than four months and teams will be back in the grind. But while fans are still wiping the dust off their cleats from spring drills, a fresh Top 25 poll has just dropped, shaking up the preseason chatter. Texas, fresh off a CFP semifinal run and armed with five-star prodigy Arch Manning, grabs the apex spot, while Notre Dame limps in at No. 2, eager to bounce back with new leadership under center. Here’s the kicker though—is this snapshot of 2025 really the full picture, or just a teaser before fall camp wars reframe the landscape? The Big Ten and SEC hog most of the spotlight with 16 teams combined, but with positional battles looming large, expect this pecking order to be anything but set in stone. Heck, given the unpredictable twists college football throws every season, who’s to say your favorite squad won’t surprise you after summer’s dust settles? So, buckle up — the fall grind approaches fast, and the rankings? They’ll be a moving target until that Week 1 whistle blows.

College football spring ball is in the books and it’s time to look ahead to the 2025 regular season.

Classes are wrapping up on campuses across the country. Summer is approaching. Before you know it, teams will be reporting to fall camp, with Week 1 less than four months away.

While there could still be some transfers and recruiting commitments, most rosters are pretty much set for the 2025 season. With spring football in the books, a post-spring college football Top 25 poll has been released on Monday morning, April 28.

Which teams are in the best shape heading into the fall?

College football analyst Andy Staples of On3 released his new post-spring college football Top 25 rankings on Monday morning.

Texas, which made the College Football Playoff semifinals last season, comes in at No. 1 overall. The Longhorns will be led by five-star quarterback Arch Manning this fall.

Notre Dame, coming off its national title game loss to Ohio State, comes in at No. 2 overall. The Fighting Irish will be led by a new quarterback, but Marcus Freeman’s team brings back a lot of talent.

Clemson, Penn State and Ohio State round out the top five in Staples’ poll.

Here’s the complete Top 25:

  1. Texas
  2. Notre Dame
  3. Clemson
  4. Penn State
  5. Ohio State
  6. Oregon
  7. Alabama
  8. Georgia
  9. Illinois
  10. Florida
  11. Texas Tech
  12. South Carolina
  13. Auburn
  14. SMU
  15. LSU
  16. Arizona State
  17. Michigan
  18. BYU
  19. Ole Miss
  20. Miami
  21. Tennessee
  22. Nebraska
  23. Iowa State
  24. Louisville
  25. Iowa

The Big Ten and the SEC are once again leading the way. The two conferences combine for 16 of the 25 spots in the post-spring poll on Monday.

There’s still a ways to go before the start of the regular season, but not much is going to change roster wise before the games kick off this fall.

However, a lot of important positional battles need to take place, so it’s likely that the Top 25 rankings will change a bit before kickoff in Week 1.
