J.D. Vance Has A Message For Ohio State Coach Ryan Day (1:01)

Few programs have had a better run of quarterback play over the past seven years than Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

And after winning the national championship this past season with Kansas State transfer Will Howard, the Bucks are now in the midst of another heated QB competition.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Day revealed that the two-man race between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz (with a third in the running) is “pretty much neck-and-neck” and he expects that to be the case throughout the spring.

“I think it’s fair to say that Tavien [St. Clair] probably has the longest way to go just because of just the lack of experience,” Day admitted to reporters Monday. “I think it’s easy to see — you guys saw it on Saturday, the talent and his ability to run, his athleticism, the arm. He has all those things.”

“He just needs to play more. He needs to see it more,” the coach added. “The games just moving really fast for him right now but he’s picking it up, he’s getting it every day. So, I’d say he probably has the farthest way to go and then Lincoln and Julian are, you know, pretty much neck-and-neck right now.”

Ohio State is one of the few big name schools that is still holding a spring game this offseason — which Day talked about last week.

“We want to do this. We want to play a spring game. Now, there may be some guys that are held from the spring game, but not many,” the coach explained.

“We feel like, I think, we’re 159 days away from playing Texas, and that day will matter to a lot of young players. So, well, we need to get out there and compete. … It’s important that we start the season fast and the first step is playing in the spring game.”
