The Dallas Cowboys have been carefully managing rookie running back Jaydon Blue after a heel and ankle injury disrupted his promising start to training camp.

Blue had been climbing the depth chart before the setback forced the team to take a cautious approach with their potential offensive weapon.

Now there’s positive news about his return to action.

“Cowboys rookie RB Jaydon Blue is expected to make his preseason debut tonight,” The Athletic’s Jon Machota shared.

“I just think I bring a lot of things to the table, not only at the running back position, but in the passing game. I’m just ready to showcase (what I can do) in a game.” Blue also expressed confidence about his versatility when speaking with Machota.

Friday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons represents Blue’s only chance to prove himself in preseason action before the regular season opener against Philadelphia on September 4.

The timing puts pressure on the Texas product to make an immediate impact.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer faces several decisions in the backfield rotation. Malik Davis has joined the mix while Miles Sanders returns from his own injury concerns.

Rookie Phil Mafah has shown promise during camp. Deuce Vaughn is also competing for touches after missing time with a hamstring issue.

Blue’s college production suggests he can handle multiple roles in Schottenheimer’s offense.

During his final season with the Longhorns, he rushed for 730 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 42 receptions for 368 yards and six more TDs through the air.

The rookie understands this represents his lone preseason opportunity to demonstrate the skills that made him an attractive draft prospect.

With limited time to make his case, Blue will need to show the explosiveness and pass-catching ability that caught Dallas’s attention during the evaluation process.
