Unlocking the Untold Power of Negro Leagues on Jackie Robinson Day: More Than Just a Number
The response from a baseball-loving nation was incredible. Between a public fundraising campaign and private donations, Lutz told ESPN more than $500,000 was raised for the league – which has grown to serve roughly 600 kids each year – including $100,000 from Major League Baseball to help pay for a new statue to replace the stolen one.
The new statue was unveiled on Aug. 5, less than seven months later.
Looking back, the outpouring is still touching for Lutz.
