Gary Danielson will retire from broadcasting following the 2025 college football season. That news was announced by CBS Sports on Wednesday afternoon.

Danielson is entering his 20th season with CBS Sports. Prior to joining the network, he spent several years at ESPN. Once the 2025 season comes to an end, he’ll be replaced at CBS by longtime NFL analyst Charles Davis.

“I have had the greatest seat in the house for 36 years and have loved every minute of it,” Danielson said in a press release. “I have discussed the timing of this moment with CBS Sports leadership over the past few years and we felt it was important I remained with the team during our transition to the Big Ten. As we enter our second full season of Big Ten football and my 20th at CBS Sports, the timing just feels right. I have so much respect for Charles Davis as both a person and an analyst. He is going to shine in this role and fit so well with this team. I have been blessed to work with incredible teammates throughout my career and I look forward to one more memorable season with Brad, Jenny, Craig Silver, Steve Milton and the crew.”

Danielson has called a handful of SEC games over the course of his career with CBS. Just this past year though, he called Big Ten games due to the network’s new media rights deal.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed, fans are convinced Danielson wanted to retire because he was sick of calling Big Ten games.

“Traded LSU-Auburn and Georgia-Florida every year for USC-Wisconsin and Ohio State-Iowa I don’t blame him,” one fan commented.

“One season of calling Big Ten games and he says I’m out,” another fan wrote on X.

“Danielson couldn’t handle one year without the SEC,” a third fan said.

There are a lot more social media posts about Danielson hating the Big Ten. While we can’t confirm that belief, there’s no doubt he enjoyed calling SEC games during his time in the booth.

Congratulations to Danielson on an incredible run in the broadcast booth.
