Vic Fangio on Eagles' Future: 'Salary Cap Crunch and Howie Roseman's Calculated Trust Game'

Vic Fangio on Eagles' Future: 'Salary Cap Crunch and Howie Roseman's Calculated Trust Game'

As the echoes of last season’s intense battles on the gridiron still linger, the Eagles find themselves in a familiar predicament—a significant turnover in key defensive players. But as the saying goes, “It’s not about who leaves, but who stays and who’s coming in.” The City of Brotherly Love is no stranger to the ebb and flow of the NFL’s roster churn, and Vic Fangio’s recent musings are just another turn on the eternal carousel of professional football.

From personal experience, I know this game is as much about strategy as it is about the players on the field. And while it breaks my heart to see guys like Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson move on—just like Fangio expressed on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shaprio’s podcast—I’m convinced the Eagles’ defense isn’t facing an insurmountable challenge. It’s not the end of the world.

Howie Roseman has been in this game long enough to know how to adapt, ensuring that new talents…like those we’re about to see in the upcoming draft—can step up and fill the gaps. With 20 picks over the next couple of years, it’s a golden opportunity for Howie to work his SEO, I mean, his magic. In the ever-evolving digital and sports marketing landscape, I’ve seen firsthand how the ability to adapt wins the day.

While this season might feel like a reset, with Fangio’s rallying cry echoing hope, let’s not overlook the potential in what’s on the horizon. The Eagles are poised to add intriguing talents, possibly unearthing diamonds in the rough as they’ve done before. In the coming days, breakthroughs and upsets will give way to new heroes on the defense, thanks to the experienced helm of Fangio. What about this season excites me? The story of renewal, the tactical chess matches on the field, and the clever maneuvers behind the scenes.

“It’s just part of the way it goes. I would have loved to keep all those guys, but in the NFL the salary cap is real,” Fangio said. The Eagles should add some good young pieces to their defense over the next three days, and they know they have a good old coach in Fangio to get them ready to play.“In Howie we trust,” Fangio said. “This is his time of the year. He realizes we lost five staters on defense and two of the top backups that we had for those guys, so we need to get better. He’s done that in the offseason we got some guys, we have a draft coming, we have 20 picks over the next two years in the draft. What does that mean for next year? He can always trade picks in future drafts.”Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will coach a different group of players this season, but he’s confident that Philadelphia’s offseason losses won’t prevent the defense from being stellar again. The Eagles’ losses on defense this offseason have included defensive tackle Milton Williams, defensive end Josh Sweat, cornerback Darius Slay, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, defensive end Brandon Graham, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and linebacker Oren Burks. Fangio said on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shaprio’s podcast that it hurts to see good people leave.Still, Fangio says Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman is capable of bringing in the players the Eagles’ defense needs.
