Vikings Narrow QB Race to Two: Will McCarthy or Brosmer Lead the Charge Against Lions?
It’s curious how the Vikings shuffled veteran QB John Wolford into their practice squad midweek, only to leave him off the active roster come Saturday. That decision tightens their quarterback ranks down to just two youngsters for the showdown in Detroit: second-year first-round pick J.J. McCarthy and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. Wolford was potentially the safety net — the emergency signal caller who could step in, but only if the top two went down or were ejected, per NFL rules. Now, faced with the possibility of running out of quarterbacks, the Vikings might have to turn to an unlikely hero — a position player taking snaps under center. Some might argue that being forced into a third quarterback spot signals a game already lost, yet the Vikings passed up utilizing the NFL’s emergency QB rule, a protocol revived after the 2022 NFC Championship chaos that saw the 49ers scrambling with Brock Purdy and ultimately Christian McCaffrey playing quarterback. It’s a bold, perhaps risky, gamble — and only time will tell if it pays off.
On Wednesday, the Vikings added veteran quarterback John Wolford to the practice squad. On Saturday, the Vikings did not sign him to the active roster.
It means the Vikings will have only two quarterbacks available at Detroit — second-year first-rounder J.J. McCarthy and undrafted rookie Max Brosmer.
Wolford, if signed to the active roster, could have been the emergency quarterback. By rule, he could have entered the game only if the other two were injured or ejected.
Now, the Vikings will have to use a position player at quarterback if that happens.
Some would say that, if an NFL team gets down to its third quarterback in any game, the cause is already lost. Still, the Vikings chose not to take advantage of the device the NFL reintroduced after the 2022 NFC Championship, when the 49ers lost Brock Purdy early and Josh Johnson was later injured and eventually running back Christian McCaffrey was taking snaps.
