Why Are the Saints Bringing Back This Former Lions WR? The Answer Might Surprise You!

There’s something almost poetic about a New Orleans Saints helmet resting quietly on the bench—like a silent promise waiting to be fulfilled. But as summer rolls in and the heat of training camp approaches, that helmet isn’t just sitting pretty. It’s about to belong to a fresh face trying to rewrite his story: Donovan Peoples-Jones. Four seasons deep into his NFL journey, with flashes of brilliance but no real spotlight, Peoples-Jones now finds himself under the gaze of a team eager to fortify its receiving ranks. Can this former sixth-round pick, who’s seen action in 58 games with two different franchises, finally carve out his niche in the Crescent City? More intriguingly—will he seize the moment and outplay a crowded field of hopeful receivers? The stage is set, and the Saints appear ready to roll the dice on experience mixed with potential. Let’s take a closer look.

The New Orleans Saints are beefing up their receiving corps as they head into the summer months.

During their recent rookie minicamp, the team took time to evaluate not just newcomers but also a handful of seasoned veterans.

Among those trying to impress was 26-year-old wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones, who apparently showed enough during his workout to catch the coaching staff’s attention.

His performance on the practice field has now translated into a contract offer.

“The Saints are signing WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, according to a source. He worked out at rookie camp this weekend,” reported Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

Peoples-Jones brings decent experience to the New Orleans Saints, having appeared in 58 NFL games since entering the league.

His professional journey has taken him through two stops so far, splitting time between the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

During his four seasons, he’s managed to collect 122 catches for 1,895 yards while finding the end zone eight times.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2020 draft after his college career at Michigan, Peoples-Jones has shown flashes of potential without fully establishing himself as a consistent threat.

His career peaked in 2022 with the Cleveland Browns when he recorded personal bests in both receptions (61) and yards (839), while matching his career high with three touchdowns.

Following a quiet stint with the Detroit Lions last season, where opportunities were scarce, Peoples-Jones now gets a fresh slate in New Orleans.

The Saints could use additional depth at the position, potentially slotting him in as their fourth or fifth receiver if he impresses through the summer.

The competition won’t be easy, though. He’ll need to outshine several other receivers fighting for limited spots, including Mason Tipton, Kevin Austin Jr., Dante Pettis, and Cedrick Wilson Jr. when camp battles heat up later this summer.
