Why Did the Lakers Prioritize JJ Redick’s Extension? GM Rob Pelinka Reveals Shocking Plans for 2025-26 Season

When a team like the Los Angeles Lakers decides to stick with a head coach who’s just completed his rookie season, it’s worth digging into what’s behind that choice. JJ Redick, no stranger to basketball yet a novice in coaching, managed to steer the storied franchise to a pretty respectable 50-32 record last year — a feat that grabbed the No. 3 spot in the Western Conference standings. But not all was rosy; their playoff run ended abruptly against the Minnesota Timberwolves in round one. Still, the front office must’ve seen enough promise during this transitional phase — GM Rob Pelinka made it official at media day: Redick’s contract is getting an extension for the 2025-26 season. The Los Angeles Lakers have extended head coach JJ Redick ahead of the 2025-26 season, general manager Rob Pelinka said Thursday at Lakers media day.

The Lakers hired Redick last year, signing him to a four-year deal at the time. Redick, now 41, didn’t have previous NBA coaching experience, but he led the Lakers to a 50-32 record and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles bowed out to Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs.
