Why Terry Smith’s Unexpected Decision to Stay at Penn State Could Change Matt Campbell’s Future Forever
When Matt Campbell inked that long-term deal with Penn State, the excitement was palpable — but the real shocker came right after. Everyone knew the big question: Could Penn State keep their own, Terry Smith, from drifting off into the coaching wilds? Well, hold onto your hats, because Terry’s not just sticking around — he’s doubling down for four more years. This isn’t just some run-of-the-mill retention story; it’s a testament to loyalty, legacy, and a commitment to excellence that’s tough to find these days. After more than a decade shaping talent and stepping up as interim head coach, Terry’s staying put, turning down spotlight offers from all over to stay true to Penn State’s heart and soul. It’s a massive win, no doubt — one that promises to ripple through the roster now and years down the line. Stick around — this coach’s story is just getting started.
Penn State and Matt Campbell reportedly came to an agreement earlier tonight, with the now former Iowa State head coach headed to Happy Valley on an eight-year deal. The first order of business for Campbell if you asked ANY Penn State fan was: ask and/or beg Terry Smith to stay at Penn State. Well, I’m not sure on the “ask” or “beg” part, but according to multiple reports (first by Audrey Snyder), Terry isn’t going freaking anywhere.

My God, what a Penn State legend. Like seriously, how do we deserve this man? It would be totally understandable if he wanted to look elsewhere after the last 12 seasons as an assistant and 8 weeks as the interim coach. And yet, Terry is already locked in. Looking around is not necessary. Not at Alabama. Not at Ohio State. And certainly not at Virginia Tech. It is Penn State or nowhere for Terry.

I don’t need to go through Terry’s resume as a coach and leader. You all know. You know how monumental this is for the short-term roster, and perhaps even more importantly, the long-term. Terry’s retention is much more than, “Hey, maybe he’ll help keep some of the current roster.” That is certainly a positive, but the guy is one of the best cornerbacks coaches in the sport and as we’ve seen the last two months, someone who impacts the program beyond his position group.
Welcome back, Terry, and thank you for fierce loyalty.
