The NHL’s comeback to the Winter Olympics this February is stirring big excitement — it’s been nearly a decade since the pros last laced up for the global stage in Sochi 2014. But here’s the kicker: the marquee venue for ice hockey at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games, the Santa Giulia Ice Hockey Arena, might not be battle-ready come game time. Construction delays have thrown a wrench in the plans, and frankly, there’s no fallback option if the arena misses its deadline. Andrea Francisi, head of Games operations, laid it out straight — “no Plan B.” The stakes couldn’t be higher with competition kicking off as early as February 5th for the women, and the men’s tournament running through February 11-22. While the optimism is cautiously held and daily work continues full throttle, the pressure cooker situation has everyone watching the clock closely. Normally, these venues undergo intensive testing well ahead of time, but even that’s been pushed into January.
