Zion Williamson's Next Move: A Shocking Career Decision Looms

Every NBA season kicks off with a glimmer of hope for New Orleans Pelicans fans — the kind of hope that’s both thrilling and torturous. Year after year, they look to Zion Williamson as their beacon of promise, wondering if this might be the season where everything clicks. But here’s the rub: will Zion finally dodge the injury gods and stay healthy enough to make a serious impact? Or, even more pressing — if he does shine, could that very success tempt him to bolt for greener pastures? As the 2025-26 campaign looms, the Pelicans find themselves at a crossroads where hope, heartbreak, and tough decisions collide. It’s a nail-biter that makes you ask — is this the season that rewrites the narrative, or will the cycle of dashed dreams continue?

It seems that New Orleans Pelicans fans have high hopes at the start of every NBA season.

And, sadly, it seems that those hopes are almost always quickly dashed.

Once again, they are expecting the best from the Pelicans and Zion Williamson in 2025-26.

Will this be the season when things actually pan out, or will they end in disappointment again?

In a new piece for ESPN, Tim MacMahon said that Williamson could choose to leave the Pelicans this season, even if he remains healthy.

“Williamson’s stay in New Orleans might have been extended by the Pelicans’ front office change, with Joe Dumars replacing David Griffin as the primary decision-maker. If Williamson can have a strong start to the season — and avoid the injury bug that has plagued his career — it’s feasible that he could seek a fresh start instead of remaining with a New Orleans franchise that seems stuck in neutral,” MacMahon wrote.

So, now Pelicans fans have two major questions hanging over their heads: will Williamson be strong and in good shape this season, and will he leave the team?

Obviously, a lot is on the line for 2025-26.

Williamson was injured again last season and only participated in 30 games.

During that time, he averaged 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists on 56.7 percent from the floor.

Following his departure from the court, rumors once again flared up about him leaving New Orleans.

The team has been making some adjustments, both on and off the court, to put them in a better position for the season ahead.

As for Williamson, he has been working on getting back in great shape.

But even if he is fully healed, he may not stick around with the only team he has ever played for

He could decide that now is the time to cut ties and try his luck with a different franchise, starting a new chapter.

Fans want him to have a strong start in the new season, but that could work against them, seal Williamson’s fate, and make him want to leave the Pelicans.
