Understanding Wash Application and Control
Washes are arguably the cornerstone of achieving a spinked effect. A wash is essentially a very thin, diluted paint, typically comprised of pigment and a medium that reduces its surface tension and allows it to flow into recesses. The key to successful spinking isn't just applying a wash, but controlling where it goes. Many painters mistakenly flood their miniatures with wash, achieving an uneven and muddy look. Instead, the focus should be on targeted application, guided by an understanding of how light naturally interacts with the model's form. Consider the areas that would naturally be in shadow – under armor plates, within folds of clothing, around weapon grips – these are the prime targets for a carefully applied wash. Building up the washes in multiple thin layers is far superior to one heavy coat.
